 Summary of Job: 

The Senior Manager of Ski Patrol oversees all aspects of the Northstar Ski Patrol and Mountain Safety. This includes staffing, training, budgeting, scheduling, interdepartmental relations, guest service, and Manager on Duty responsibilities. The Senior Manager of Ski Patrol is responsible for ensuring the safety of our on-mountain guests and employees, overseeing medical aid, avalanche mitigation work, rope rescue, lift evacuation and avalanche rescue.  In addition, this job oversees summertime Bike Park Patrol and may have additional responsibilities with the overall Bike Park operation. The job requires strong leadership qualities, problem solving skills, change management, and working in high risk and high stress environments. 

 

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Successfully recruit, hire, coach, motivate and develop a high performing ski patrol, mountain safety and bike park patrol teams.  Ensure leadership team and employees are aligned with Vail Resort’s goals, values and core competencies.  Develop leaders within the scope of this position’s responsibility to improve leadership within current roles and prepare them for increased responsibility/accountability.
  • Be a leader in the effort to improve safety within Ski Patrol and the resort as a whole with the goal of reducing/eliminating employee and guest injuries.  Coordinate closely with the Sr. Manager of Health & Safety regarding the same. 
  • Lead the effort within Ski Patrol to minimize snowmobile use and fleet size to eliminate incidents surrounding snowmobile travel.
  • Create and oversee departmental budgets while tracking performance to expectations.

  • Actively participate in relevant best practice groups.
  • Increase operational efficiency and effectiveness through on-going communication within the department, mountain and resort operations.
  • Oversee snow safety with regards to avalanche hazard forecasting, avalanche mitigation, oversight of explosives, and avalanche rescue.
  • Own interdepartmental and intradepartmental relations to promote team unity.
  • Oversee all departmental training programs, schedule of training, training topics, and general safety during training.
  • Work with snow surfaces leadership and teams to best coordinate terrain openings in conjunction with snowmaking and grooming plans.   
  • Ensure winter mountain setup, daily monitoring of conditions and maintenance including trail openings and closures, signage, ropes, and pads and correlating spring tear down.
  • Oversee summer bike patrol including but not limited to mountain signage, closures and trail safety.  Additional bike park responsibilities may be assigned. 
  • Direct oversight of Accident Investigation team including hiring of team, training, and coordinating with Health and Safety.
  • Act as “Manager on Duty” as requested by Director of Mountain Operations and General Manager.
  • Actively participate in Resort Leadership Team meetings and Daily Operational calls.
  • Engage and participate in company-wide leadership development programs.

Job Requirements: 

Required:

  • Valid Driver’s License and clean DMV record
  • Minimum 8 years ski patrol experience, including avalanche control work
  • Able to obtain/retain the required clearances through the DOJ for the use and storage of explosives. 
  • Expert-level skiing and/or snowboarding ability
  • Ability to speak, read and write effectively in English
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other VRI software
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions year round
  • Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time & have the ability to lift and carry 75lb

Preferred:

  • High school education or equivalent, college degree
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum 2 years bike park patrol experience

 

The budgeted range starts at $77,000 - $98,000 + annual bonus.  Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
