Job Summary:
The Supervisor/Lead Wrangler oversees the wrangler team, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality operations at Keystone Stables. This leadership role is responsible for supervising daily stables activities, guiding and supporting wrangler staff, and assisting with the oversight of Back Ranch food service operations. They maintain the health and care of draft horses while ensuring exceptional guest experience during dinner services. The role includes creating team schedules, correcting timesheets, entering dinners into Guest Connect, coordinating with the Chef on special service requests, and collaborating with the manager to address stables needs. The position requires extensive horse knowledge and experience, as well as the ability to drive horses on sleighs in harsh winter conditions, making resilience, toughness, and adaptability essential qualities.

 

Job Specifications:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the stables crew, ensuring equipment and facilities are clean, organized, and well-maintained.
  • Supervise and participate in the daily care of draft horses, including cleaning corrals, feeding, picking hooves, brushing, harnessing, and bridling; must be comfortable providing basic veterinary care.
  • Guide and support staff in assisting with dinners, helping guests safely get in and out of sleighs.
  • Coordinate with transportation to ensure rides are properly departing from the Adventure Center.
  • Communicate with Adventure Center staff regarding late rides, guest delays, or cancellations.
  • Ensure tips and gratuities are accurately entered into timesheets and make corrections as needed.
  • Comfortable using Legion, Guest Connect, TOCK, and other Vail Resorts programs.
  • Ensure guests are greeted professionally, checked in properly, and that all release forms are accurately completed; handle payments as needed.
  • Provide leadership to the wrangler team by delegating tasks, monitoring performance, and supporting staff development.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned to maintain smooth, safe, and efficient operations.
  • Assist in clearing snow using machinery, including operating skid steers or other equipment in snowy conditions; may be asked to drive a snowcat to clear and move snow at Back Ranch.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license and be capable of transporting horses in a trailer; must
  • know how to hook and unhook a trailer. Know or be willing to learn how to properly drive draft horses on sleighs (preferred).
  • Serve guests and bartend when required; must have proper food handler and tips certifications.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to learn and grow; all necessary skills to perform the job safely will be taught.
  • Strong desire to develop in a leadership role at Vail Resorts.
  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English.
  • Ability to lift 50–85 lbs.
  • Must be able to tack draft horses that are 6 ft or taller.
  • Ability to stand and walk continuously for up to 8 hours.
  • Experience working with horses, preferably 5+ years.
  • 1–2 years of leadership experience or comparable supervisory experience required.
  • Strong horse knowledge, including basic veterinary care.
  • Comfortable learning multiple Vail Resorts programs and collaborating with multiple departments.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including snow and winter elements.

 

The expected pay range is $25.00/hr - $27.53/hr. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
