Job Summary:

The Senior Manager of Ski Patrol oversees all aspects of the Crested Butte Ski Patrol department. This includes staffing, training, budgeting, scheduling, interdepartmental relations, and guest service. The Senior Manager Ski Patrol is responsible for ensuring the safety of our on mountain guests and employees. Overseeing medical aid, avalanche mitigation work, rope rescue, lift evacuation and avalanche rescue programs. In addition, this job requires oversight of summertime Bike Patrol operations working in conjunction with Bike Park build crew to improve and create summer trails. The job requires strong leadership qualities, and creative problem solving.

  • The expected range is $67,000 - $81,150 + annual bonus 

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Successfully recruit, hire, coach, motivate and develop a high performing ski patrol leadership team. 
  • Ensure Patrol leadership team and front line patrollers are aligned with Vail Resorts goals, values and core competencies. 
  • Develop Patrol leaders to exceed the scope of their position’s responsibilities to improve leadership within current roles and prepare patrol leaders for increased responsibility/accountability
  • Be a leader to improve safety within Ski Patrol and the resort as a whole with the goal of reducing/eliminating worker and guest injury. 
  • Coordinate closely with the Sr Manager of Health & Safety driving safety initiatives to completion. 
  • Champion efforts within Ski Patrol to reduce snowmobile use and fleet size to eliminate risks surrounding snowmobile travel
  • Create and oversee departmental budgets to meet or exceed budgeted targets

  • Actively participate in assigned best practice groups.
  • Increase operational efficiency and effectiveness through on-going communication within group and with all departments within mountain operations
  • Oversight of snow safety program with regards to avalanche hazard forecasting, avalanche mitigation, oversight of explosives, and avalanche rescue
  • Serve as a management representative in contract negotiations/collective bargaining with Communication Workers of America for agreements covering patrollers
  • Administer any collective bargaining agreements, ensuring compliance with all terms
  • Oversees departmental training programs, schedule of training, training topics, and safety during training
  • Work with Sr manager of Mt operations to help establish daily grooming plan
  • Oversee summer bike patrol operations including but not limited to mountain signage, closures and trail safety. 
  • Direct oversight of Accident Investigation team including hiring of team, training, and coordinating with Health and Safety
  • Act as “Manager on Duty” as determined by Director of Mountain Operations and General Manager
  • Actively participate in Resort Leadership Team meetings and Daily Operational call
  • Engage and participate in company-wide leadership development programs
  • Winter mountain setup, daily monitoring of conditions and maintenance including trail openings and closures, signage, ropes, and pads.  Spring tear down
  • Oversees candidate/apprentice program including budget and staff levels.
  • Oversees evaluation of Patrol candidates to ensure candidate meets Patrol entry level expectations
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements:

  • High school education or equivalent, some college preferred
  • 7 to 10 years ski patrol experience, experience in avalanche control work is a must; experience working or managing in a unionized environment a plus
  • 5 years or more experience in a leadership role
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license, EMT, CPR, Colorado blasters card or ability to gain card in one years’ time
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Strong communication skills including verbal & written
  • Strong financial management ability
  • Advanced skiing/riding ability, must be able to work in extreme weather conditions (winter/summer)
  • Positive, solutions oriented leadership

 

The expected pay range is $67,000 - $81,150 + annual bonus. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
