Summary 

The Vail Resorts Finance Team is committed to Building Leaders and Driving Value.  We are seeking a talented high capacity Head of Tax to lead our global tax department. This position may be remote in one of the states we currently operate in, or based in our corporate headquarters in Broomfield, CO. Vail Resorts employs more than 55,000+ and has a market capitalization of more than $7.5 billion.  

 

The Head of Tax will be responsible for the strategic vision of the global tax department, including all aspects of tax planning & research (acquisition, structuring, and optimization), tax accounting, tax compliance, acquisition integration, and talent development.  

  

This leader will report directly to the CAO, will be a member of the Accounting leadership team, and will lead a team of seven tax professionals with the potential to take on additional scope with demonstrated leadership and performance. This leader is primarily responsible for all aspects of Vail Resorts’ accounting for income taxes, worldwide tax compliance, and tax planning, which includes thought leadership in driving value. 

 

The key deliverables expected for the person in this role to be considered an outstanding performer are: 

  • Ensure compliance and tax accounting are filed on time and without errors or surprises.   
  • Develop a strategic long-term plan for the tax function, including both income and non-income taxes.  
  • Foster a culture of growth, development and opportunity for the talent of the tax function in alignment with Vail Resorts’ talent management philosophy.  
  • Assess worldwide legal structure, considering tax planning opportunities, and recommend changes to the structure.  
  • Begin to understand the company’s state tax structure and develop strategies how optimizing the structure for both cash taxes and ETR perspectives. 

 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Lead the organization’s tax strategy and policy and direct the overall planning (including cash tax forecasting) and compliance function for federal, state, local, and international tax laws (Canada, Australia and Switzerland). 
  • Oversee the quarterly, and year-end tax provision and related tax accounts for financial reporting. 
  • Provide due diligence and structural advice on a variety of transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and cross-border structures. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, international and SEC requirements by maintaining current knowledge of regulations; advising management and communicating with outside advisors to ensure timely tax and SEC reporting requirements. 
  • Develop and execute on a plan to comply with Pillar II global tax regulations.
  • Oversee transfer pricing studies for cross-border transactions. 
  • Drive strong business and financial insight as it relates to tax strategy and planning, including ability to synthesize complex tax issues into executive-level presentations and communication and connecting tax strategies to business outcomes and enterprise value creation.
  • Manage and conduct technical tax research and provide executive-level synthesis to drive decision-making with senior leaders. 
  • Lead, develop and inspire the corporate tax team with a focus on high performance, including acquiring, developing, and retaining top talent. 
  • Play a critical role on the Accounting leadership team, bringing an enterprise-level perspective to support the strategic, talent, and process improvement efforts in the Finance organization. 
  • Drive and implement best practices in the global tax function to support Vail Resorts’ continued growth and expansion both through organic initiatives as well as through our acquisition strategy. 
  • Oversee domestic and foreign tax audits and audit protests to defend tax positions and negotiate favorable outcomes. 

  

Job Qualifications 

  • Minimum 15+ years of U.S. federal and/or state corporate tax experience, either in-house with U.S. multinational corporations or in public accounting.  Preference for a combination of both CPA firm and industry experience. 
  • Outstanding academic credentials; Bachelor’s degree in tax or equivalent.  Advanced degree (MST and/or J.D.) preferred. 
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of regulatory reporting requirements and the ability to manage large, multiple, time-sensitive projects contemporaneously. 
  • Strong prioritization skills, including ability to navigate tensions of simultaneous requests; ability to communicate effectively with leadership for alignment what is being prioritized and what isn’t .
  • Strong knowledge of current tax rules, U.S. GAAP, and SEC reporting. 
  • Broad understanding of U.S. corporate tax law with ability to develop tax strategy globally. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a broad range of tax matters arising in diverse jurisdictions. 
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including making presentations to senior leadership. 
  • Effectively manage and build capabilities and culture for high performing professional team.

The expected Total Compensation for this role is $220,000 - $245,000 + annual bonus + equity. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.

Vail Resorts offers a ‘Hybrid’ work environment for Broomfield-based roles where employees must live within 50 miles of the Broomfield office and work on-site Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and have flexibility to work off-site on Mondays and Fridays.
