Job Summary:
Come be a part of the industry-leading sustainability program, Commitment to Zero, at Vail Resorts. The Assistant Sustainability Manager for Summit County leads the environmental sustainability efforts for all Breckenridge and Keystone locations. 

This role will report to the Director of Sustainability and work with the Senior Director, Vail Resorts’ Sustainability Team, local leadership, and employees across business units to identify and implement sustainability projects and programs. These programs will be in support of the Commitment to Zero initiative, including energy and emissions, with a focus on zero waste programs at Keystone and Breckenridge. This role will focus on integrating our operations and employees with our sustainability goals, through program development, oversight, and implementation. The Assistant Sustainability Manager for Summit County is also expected to support the Director of Sustainability with representation of Breckenridge and Keystone in environmental matters with the local communities and public agencies. The position is intended to be based at Breckenridge with travel to Keystone – with primary job responsibilities being focused in person at the resorts and with operations teams.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, oversee, and implement Commitment to Zero vision and environmental sustainability programs to achieve a zero net operating footprint by 2030 at Breckenridge and Keystone.
  • Be a resort-level sustainability leader that drives innovative programs in the areas of energy and emissions, waste, supply chain management, and other relevant areas to inspire our employees and our guests.
  • Waste Program Management & Execution
    • Own day‑to‑day management and execution of zero waste programs across all operations at Breckenridge and Keystone resorts and hospitality locations.
    • Prioritize progress toward resort zero waste goals in alignment with Commitment to Zero.
    • Manage waste pick up schedules and coordinate with operational teams at each resort to ensure consistent operational support and data accuracy.
    • Lead zero waste data collection, tracking, and reporting to support performance monitoring and decision‑making.
  • Resort Engagement & Training
    • Drive resort engagement through Commitment to Zero and Zero Waste onboarding and training programs.
    • Support education and behavior‑change initiatives for frontline teams to improve waste sorting and diversion performance.
    • Serve as a key on‑site sustainability resource for resort teams, providing hands‑on guidance and troubleshooting.
  • Hybrid Role & Team Support
    • Own engagement and coordination of Commitment to Zero Hybrid roles and and/or Environmental teams at each Summit County resort.
    • Manage and support resort environmental teams focused on waste operations, including rounds, trainings, tipping, and sorting activities.
    • Help build operational consistency and best‑practice sharing across resorts.
  • Vendor & Partner Management
    • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with waste haulers, Rubicon, and other program vendors.
    • Collaborate closely with external partners to resolve operational issues and identify opportunities to improve diversion outcomes.
    • Support the identification and implementation of energy efficiency projects at the resort level, along with renewable energy opportunities with local utilities and community partners.
    • Project management: Support the management of complex capital and budgetary projects that may involve multiple departments, time constraints, and external partners that further our sustainability goals.
  • Engagement and outreach: Effectively communicate environmental sustainability through various channels that will demonstrate leadership and drive guest and employee loyalty to our programs and resorts.
  • Teamwork: Act as a contributor and leader within the Breckenridge and Keystone resort leadership teams and greater Vail Resorts Sustainability Team.
  • Supports branding, positioning, and outreach of environmental initiatives to guests, employees, and communities in alignment with EpicPromise.
  • Frequent travel will be required between resorts.
  • Occasional travel will be required to the Corporate Headquarters in Colorado and offsite events at various locations.
  • Support environmental compliance efforts, as needed.

Job Requirements:

Required:

  • Primary work location at Breckenridge with Travel to Keystone
  • Ability to facilitate strategic dialogue and problem-solving across multiple departments
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and making new relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient skills in Excel
  • Ability to meet travel requirements
  • Proficient skier/snowboarder for travel within the resort in winter season

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of energy and waste systems
  • Bachelors degree
  • 4+ years of experience preferably in sustainability including energy and waste reduction
  • Mountain resort or hospitality experience
  • Experience with waste diversion and waste reduction strategies
  • Experience with energy management and energy efficiency strategies

 

The expected pay range is $58,461.98 - $60,000.00. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
