Job Summary:

The Stowe Rocks Climbing Center is actively seeking Climbing Center Lead to provide orientation and coaching to clients with technical knowledge of climbing and other recreational opportunities Stowe Rocks Climbing Center offers. The Climbing Center Lead inspects climbing equipment and terrain, supervises the climbing center, conducts instructional trainings and is a climbing resource for clients.  The Climbing Center Lead must be able to communicate professionally, must be comfortable providing hands-on assistance, and must be able to survey the climbing area on a routine basis.  The Climbing Center Lead is certified internally to set up and operate technical adaptive climbing systems and perform technical rescues. The Climbing Center Lead will work with the Adventure Center Supervisor to oversee operation of the Indoor Climbing Center which includes opening & closing procedures, staff and clients, Stowe Rocks Climbing Center programs that include but are not limited to the Adaptive Climbing Experience (ACE) and is a client service resource.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred
  • AMGA CWI Top Rope/Lead - preferred.
  • Must be client-service oriented.
  • Must have minimum first aid qualifications including current CPR and accredited Basic First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to work at height of 40’.
  • Ability to learn and to demonstrate technical rope work, and to use and demonstrate the use of climbing equipment such as carabiners, belay devices, pulleys, lanyards, etc.
  • Ability to perform physical activities that include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform very heavy work (defined as exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects).
  • Visual acuity necessary to inspect and monitor equipment and operations.
  • Good communication skills, both with coworkers and clients.
  • Personnel management experience

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide general oversight and monitoring during operational hours of the Climbing Center, ensuring both clients and staff adheres to the safety policies and procedures.  
  • Inspect the climbing areas daily, including fixed and movable equipment.  Document inspections legibly and professionally.  Report any concerns to Supervisor immediately, and, when warranted, close features or remove equipment from service.
  • Provide clients with appropriate harness systems.  Review with clients how to wear, use and remove equipment. 
  • Orient clients to the climbing area through oral instructions and demonstrations.  Be patient and considerate of clients’ needs and communicate in a clear manner. 
  • Monitor client behavior and progress in the Climbing Center.  Learn to recognize when clients require assistance and coaching.  Be prepared to help, verbally and/or in a hands-on manner, when needed.   
  • Provide warnings when observing clients or staff that violate safety rules.  
  • Provide climbing area maintenance when necessary.  
  • Provide first aid as qualified, or summon first aid assistance from other staff members and/or community resources.
  • Provide a variety of rescue services within training parameters to clients that need assistance in the climbing area.
  • Supervise Climbing Center Guides when Supervisor is not able to be in the area.

 

The expected pay range is $22.00 - $23.00. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
