In partnership with the Director or Employee Relations and Compliance, the Senior Manager, Employee and Labor Relations is responsible for establishing the Employee Relations (ER) function and setting the strategic plan that will set the tone for a healthy long-term relationship between the Company and employees in service to delivering innovative, scalable and efficient HR Services. The Senior Manager will oversee the team of ER Consultants and will provide direction on complex issue resolution to ensure decisions support company policies, Vail Resorts values, and federal, state and provincial laws and regulations. This role will monitor ER trends to proactively address and mitigate future issues. This role will also promotes and build a solid and effective relationships between Unions and Vail Resorts.



Establish the new Employee Relations function

  • Implement standardized processes for handling ER issues while helping get to root cause and remediation.
  • Establish team working norms and development of ER performance criteria.

Provide leadership and coaching for field Employee Relations Consultants and inform the ER strategy

  • Oversee the administration of ER focus areas, including performance management and discipline, employee workplace or policy concerns, staff reorganizations and reductions, unemployment compensation, background check dispositions, workplace accommodations and fitness for duty processes.
  • Identify trends and develop strategies to foster positive employee relations in the business. Provide direction to ER Consultants as they communicate trends, provide training and show their footprint to the regions they support.
  • Review and provide feedback on ER case documentation and management.
  • Function as the HR point of contact for legal or regulatory inquiries. May assist in the preparation and responses to third-party EEOC, and other governmental charges and requests as well as threatened litigation.
  • Coordinate assignment of cases from the HelpLine and the case management system.
  • Develop, communicate and implement ER programs, policies and procedures.

Manage individual ER case load including labor relations

  • Deliver high quality decisions and counsel consistently to the business.
  • Identify and analyze employee relations matters and recommend appropriate employment action to maintain continuity of approach, achieve optimal performance, and minimize risk.
  • Coordinate with HR Business Partners and People Leaders regarding employee-related aspects of involuntary terminations such as termination for cause, job eliminations, and separations. This includes employee documentation preparation, notifications, tracking of termination documentation and related reporting.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with recognized union organizations.
  • Serve as an expert on any active collective bargaining agreements (CBA), providing advice and guidance to management on contract provisions and contract interpretation.
  • Collaborate with employment counsel and affected management on grievance, arbitration, and unfair labor practice issues.
  • Serve as the lead coordinator and possible spokesperson for collective bargaining negotiations. Furnish information, such as reference documents and statistical data concerning labor legislation, labor market conditions, prevailing union and management practices, wage and salary surveys, and employee benefit programs, for use in review of current contract provision and proposed changes.
  • Create tools and training to develop manager skills in a bargained-for environment.
  • Develop company union-free strategy.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • 8+ years of demonstrated experience accurately interpreting and applying employment policies and procedures in a large, complex organization; experience with the administration of collective bargaining agreements and leading negotiations preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and align a remote team of ER Consultants.
  • Experience with driving a Union-free strategy and the ability to negotiate the bargaining agreement upon renewal.
  • Strong issue spotting and analytical skills to enable intake of ER issues and cases, and calibrate/elevate as needed.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize key insights gleaned from ER data and analytics.
  • Strong ability to build relationship across stakeholders to drive the ER strategy.
  • Proven ability to balance multiple priorities, partners and work streams.
  • Strong facilitation and business partnership skills.
  • Effective communicator.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others.
  • Ability to conduct effective HR investigations.
  • Experience driving a Union-free strategy and the ability to negotiate the bargaining agreement upon renewal.
  • Position will require up to 25% travel to other locations
