Vail Resorts is seeking an experienced leader to develop and lead the Company’s Community Relations team.  The Senior Director of Community Relations will be a strategic partner to the Mountain division of the organization, designing outreach and engagement strategies for key stakeholders in the communities in which we operate, including local elected officials, community boards, and advocacy groups.

 Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the team responsible for the tools, training, and best practices to enable the resort senior leadership teams to engage effectively with community stakeholders on a wide variety of issues relating to resort operations and long-range community planning;
  • Develop data-driven approach to tracking and monitoring the Company’s engagement efforts and incorporating key take-aways into community relations planning;
  • Work collaboratively with the Company’s Communications, Community Giving and Engagement, and Government Relations teams to proactively develop and support the Company’s brand and reputation in the community;
  • Identify “over the horizon” issues and engage in effective advance outreach;
  • Manage focused and coordinated response team on critical or exigent community issues;
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the resort senior leadership teams and the executive committee on a wide array of community issues and objectives;
  • Ensure clear, consistent, and coordinated communication amongst internal stakeholders on community issues and developments impacting the Company’s operations;
  • Assist in establishing and managing budgets.  Remotely manage outside contractors and local experts on a variety of complex matters; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Highly strategic and entrepreneurial leader with 12+ years of relevant experience, at least six of which have involved direct management of a team;
  • Masters degree in Public Affairs, MBA, or other related advanced degree preferred
  • Strong business acumen with experience designing creative new strategic initiatives and driving successful program development and expansion;
  • Exceptional communication and public speaking skills; ability to serve (and train others to serve) as a compelling and engaging spokesperson for the organization;
  • Knowledge of the unique issues facing mountain resort communities, including affordable housing, seasonal economies, and other long-range community planning issues;
  • Ability to lead, inspire and develop a high functioning team;
  • Experience implementing and using a stakeholder engagement platform and/or other systems to track data demonstrating the success or failure of various strategies and tactics;
  • Experience developing and delivering high-quality training materials to diverse stakeholder groups;
  • Creative, high-energy, and positive team player who seizes new opportunities;
  • An agile and flexible thinker, with the ability to quickly learn new areas of the business;
  • An adept communicator, capable of distilling complex information into concise summaries supporting thoughtful, well-reasoned recommendations;
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional service to cross-functional teams;
  • Demonstrated judgment and ability to analyze problems, propose resolutions, and provide advice that is creative and practical;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work under high pressure conditions and to successfully handle urgent situations with patience and diplomacy;
  • A resourceful self-starter, results and success-oriented, with the ability to ensure timely follow through by company employees;
  • Experience with international/cross-border operations preferred;
  • Willingness to travel to the company’s various resorts, including some overnight travel;
  • Ability to ski or ride
