Working out of the Vail Resorts corporate offices in Broomfield CO, the Sr. Director of Health and Safety will be responsible for oversight of the Health & Safety Center of Excellence (COE), which houses subject matter experts and support functions.  COE management responsibilities include setting and executing the strategy to ensure the safety of employees and guests across the company, oversight of H&S related program(s), and project management for H&S related projects across the enterprise.  The Sr. Director of Health and Safety will determine initiatives and metrics to support the strategy, create the right programs, and measure the effectiveness of our efforts including workers compensation, resort safety, regulatory compliance, and incident management for general liability.

 

The Health and Safety Sr. Director will plan, budget, oversee, and document all aspects of specific Health and Safety Programs implemented within their span of control.  She/he will work closely with Health and Safety and Operations leadership, as well as Legal and HR to create, build, implement and sustain key Health & Safety Initiatives. This person will lead, negotiate, and influence across all locations, engage within their local communities, support the efforts of their teams as required, to ensure successful safety program project completion.

 

The Health and Safety Sr. Director will contribute to the overall strategy of the Health & Safety function by anticipating business challenges and developing world-class H&S solutions for the enterprise.  She/he will set the strategic direction and oversee the implementation of the Health, Safety and Loss Prevention strategy for the network to achieve world-class safety performance.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the H&S VP in developing, implementing, measuring and sustaining Health and Safety programs, processes and initiatives.
  • Support the operational leadership as the key point of contact and subject matter expert for Health and Safety
  • Lead and support the H&S/LP strategic plan ensuring integration and alignment with regional operational goals.
  • Be a strategic thought partner for the H&S VP, as well as company executives. Pursue innovative and proactive strategies to prevent employee & guest injuries, and non-compliance issues.
  • Serve as a key driver and motivator of culture change, operationalizing Health, Safety and Loss Prevention while ensuring compliance to best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the development of H&S expertise and culture for the field operations team.
  • Lead and drive operational ownership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive incident prevention strategy and tactics to reduce guest and employee exposure.
  • Lead and educate local safety teams on programs and initiatives to further incident reduction and prevention programs.
  • Work collaboratively with H&S professionals, Operations, Legal and HR to accomplish collective goals and objectives.
  • Maintain good communication between team members and key stakeholders. The ability to operate and influence in a matrix environment without having specific authority is critical to success in this role.
  • Oversees and advises on implementation and sustainment of programs/projects.
  • Integrates third parties, as required, into plans and execution, e.g., monitor & hold accountable.
  • Conduct trend, ROI/cost-benefit, and best practices research and analysis; prepares reports of findings and develop recommendations and presentations for the H&S Leadership based on research.
  • Supports the execution and tracking of all H&S fiscal year initiatives and provide regular updates to the organization.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental, or a related field is preferred
  • 10+ years of experience successfully planning and executing in a matrix environment is preferred
  • Professional certification in safety, health or environmental:  e.g. CSP, GSP, CIH, CSHM (preferred, but not required.)
  • Expertise in safety standards (e.g. LOTO, Work At Heights, Confined Space) and best practices, as well as excellent safety program management skills is required.
  • Experience identifying and implementing safety program and process improvements in an operational environment is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and NFPA regulations, including Canada is preferred
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and ability to focus on the big picture
  • Experience successfully leading and implementing change
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with strong ability for operating in ambiguity
  • Experience accomplishing objectives through others

 

The budgeted range starts at $125,500 - $175,000 + annual bonus + equity.  Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
