Summary of Job:

The rental manager oversees all aspects of Afton’s equipment rental department. We are seeking highly-motivated candidates who are well-organized, take initiative, and understand how to lead a complex operation. This person will be responsible for driving strong revenue performance, ensure safety is a number 1 priority, have a positive impact on the employee experience, and ensure the department operates with efficiency and professionalism. This position is seasonal, running approximately from October 1st to April 1st.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Execute daily operations by opening and/or closing retail/rental outlets, including filling front-line employee positions as necessary, especially during non-peak periods.
  • Oversee a staff of 90 team members and 3 locations
  • Serves customers by establishing rapport, building customer confidence, providing accurate information, and promoting product through point of successful sale.
  • Ensure all weekly scheduling needs are met in a timely manner
  • Partner with the Retail/Rental Manager and other senior leadership to contribute to the overall betterment of the guest experience, employee experience, and financial results of the resort.
  • Act as a mentor who can train and lead the rental technician team. Partner with the Retail/Rental Manager to establish and implement procedures and processes that support brand standards.
  • Assist with uniform processes and procedures, as needed.
  • Assist with HR processes and procedures, as needed.
  • Maintain electronic filing system through attention to detail and timeliness.
  • Assist in the training and development of retail/rental staff and seasonal supervisors.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally to staff and guests. Respond and engage with customer suggestions, complaints, and recognition.
  • Promote product in line with customer's expressed needs.
  • Promoting the damage waiver on rental equipment products.
  • Ensure pricing is accurate and current, including any and all promotions.
  • Fit boots, skis, snowboards, helmets and/or poles to each guest.
  • Adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of Vail Resorts and Afton Alps.
  • Create and maintain a productive and safe work environment, including implementing and retaining all company mandated safety-related training and assessments.
  • Ensure all retail/rental locations are clean, have updated materials, and present a professional appearance to our guests, staff, and purveyors.
  • Manage administrative needs for the retail/rental employees.
  • Develop, adhere to, and role model the company’s mission, vision, and values. Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of retail sales and customer service, outdoor sporting goods experience – Preferred. At least 1 year of supervisory experience in a customer service environment – Preferred. High school degree or equivalent.
  • College degree – Preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years old – Required.
  • Professionalism and strong guest service skills, attention to detail and timeliness.
  • Flexible schedule required during peak times throughout the year.  Must be willing to work evenings, holidays and weekends – Required.
  • Previous snow sports rental experience – Preferred.
  • Knowledge of products and trends within the outdoor sporting goods industry.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, previous RPOS and Filemaker experience –  Preferred.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to ensure: teamwork, high level guest contact, and commitment to guest service.


Job Description:

  • Must demonstrate ability to receive and give direction and act upon it.
  • Must be mechanically inclined with the ability to use hand tools and power tools on a daily basis.
  • Willing to become certified by ski binding manufacturers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply specific company designed methods and protocol. Friendly, personable, and comfortable working with people.

The budgeted range starts at $25 - $35.  Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
