SUMMARY OF JOB:

Vail Resorts is the world’s leading mountain resort operator, with 37 resorts in 15 states and three countries. The Communications Team is responsible for promoting Vail Resorts and its values; each of our world-class resorts; and the product that provides guests with unrivaled access to all of them, the Epic Pass. In addition to strategic communications and PR, our resort-based communications teams divide into three regions: West, Rocky Mountain and East. These regional teams manage all field marketing efforts at our resorts, including brand activations to help us reach our mission of providing an Experience of a Lifetime to our guests. 

 

Based in Whistler, the Communications Manager for Whistler Blackcomb is responsible for promoting and protecting the reputation of this international resort through proactive media relations, effective storytelling, social media management and strategic communications. This role will act as a spokesperson for the resort, be heavily involved in proactive tourism-based storytelling, and will be responsible for issues management and crisis communications, as needed. The Manager will support resort leadership with communications initiatives (internally and externally), including within the resorts’ communities. The Manager will also play a key role in managing the resorts’ social media accounts to ensure consistent and authentic storytelling across our owned channels.

 

This position reports to the Sr. Manager of Resort Communications and Marketing for Whistler Blackcomb & Stevens Pass, and is also part of the West Coast Communications team, responsible for building the reputation of Vail Resorts, the Epic Pass and the company’s 5 resorts in California, Washington State and British Columbia. It will be part of an on-call schedule and will require work outside of a Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm work week, including weekends during peak periods.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Act as a spokesperson for Whistler Blackcomb, particularly for travel media
  • Manage media relations for Whistler Blackcomb – both reactively and through proactive outreach, to secure high-funnel and targeted media coverage.
  • Serve as a key communications resource for the resorts’ leaders and develop strategic messaging that supports their goals internally and externally.  
  • Work closely with the West Coast Region team to ensure brilliant execution of the regional strategies.  
  • Work closely with other members of the Pacific Northwest team to develop social media strategy, plan and execute stories about Whistler and ensure effective community management of Whistler’s social presence.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders across the resorts.  
  • Create, manage and execute meaningful hosting experiences for visiting media, including itineraries, logistics, and follow-up. Act as a media escort when needed.
  • Work closely with the Field Marketing Manager to facilitate the execution of field marketing efforts, including brand activations and events.
  • Create compelling content to help tell Whistler Blackcomb’s story.
  • Manage media lists, media tracking, and reporting.

 

 REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications or Marketing 
  • Strong, intermediate-level skiing or snowboarding and mountain biking skills for hosting media
  • Extensive experience in an external communications or PR role, and proven experience with working with journalists
  • Excellent writing ability to draft nuanced communications on a variety of topics
  • Experience with all forms of external communications channels, especially news media and social media 
  • Experience with crisis communications and issues management
  • A passionate and out-front leader with drive to develop as a leader
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills to build and maintain highly-effective working relationships internally and externally  
  • Team-play, positive attitude with a drive to strives for collective success
