PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

Responsible to lead multiple teams of patrollers in a specific zone for the day to day operations on the mountain.  This person will oversee the daily ski patrol functions and help coordinate with Patrol Mangers and Sr. Manager to facilitate daily projects.  Drive a strong safety and guest service culture within Patrol.  Participate in daily operations as an advanced patroller, search and rescue or specialty area as needed.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

CULTURE

  • Drive a positive patrol culture by holding patrollers accountable to performance and behavioral standards of the Company;
  • Positively support the combined patrol culture by supporting new procedures that work towards this goal.  Work constructively to bring solutions to the leadership table while vocally supporting agreed upon new changes with the patrol teams;
  • Recognize and reward employees for the positive behaviors and operational excellence that support the Vail Values based on their relative contribution to the team and overall organization;
  • Actively support behaviors that show respect for others on the team, and take necessary actions to correct any behaviors that do not show respect for the team;

 

OPERATIONS

  • Coordinate and lead a group of 2-3 patrol teams, across the entire mountain in daily patrol operations, under the advisement of The Patrol Leadership Team;
  • Hold employees accountable to the Employee Manual and Patrol Manual;
  • Hold patrollers accountable to the work assigned and to the positive behaviors that reinforce one patrol team and the company culture.  Team Leads will be required to deliver positive and constructive feedback to patrollers, including taking disciplinary and corrective action when necessary;
  • Conduct timely performance evaluations in alignment with overall input from multiple sources including The Patrol Leadership Team;
  • Ensure the Accident Investigation Team is well prepared, trained for the task and follows through with the required steps;
  • Assist with special event planning and preparation;
  • Successfully complete hiring paperwork, training assistance, and scheduling of seasonal patrollers within given timeframes;
  • Ensure accountability of patroller development by tracking the training performance and certifications within given deadlines.  Identify and immediately communicate to the patrol leadership team when patrollers are falling short of their expectations;
  • Assist with maintaining an updated patrol SOP documentation, manuals, and training tools;
  • Contribute to the ongoing safety culture

 

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Communicate individual and team performance in relation to job duties and behavioral expectations to The Patrol Leadership Team while documenting performance when necessary;
  • Communicate team goals, daily expectations and progress to the front line patrollers, improving the department’s metrics and measurements throughout the season;

LEGAL

  • Immediately inform, consult and take part in conducting necessary investigations of employee complaints, upon HR or The Patrol Leadership Team advisement;
  • Ensure proper documentation and follow up of patroller attendance, requested FMLA, ADA or other requested accommodations with input from Human Resources and The Patrol Leadership Team;
  • Identify employee issues and take applicable action to resolve inappropriate behaviors immediately, involving key stakeholders in any decision when necessary;

OTHER

  • Assist in other tasks and projects as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Degree or equivalent;
  • Must have experience as a Patrol Lead;
  • Must have and keep EMT,OEC or WFR certification current;
  • Extensive knowledge of ski patrol including:  medical, trails, scheduling, weather, training, snowmobile, accident investigation, lift evacuation, and slope safety;
  • Extensive knowledge of Operations, including:  snowmaking, risk management, terrain park, lift maintenance, race crew, lift operations, mountain safety, F & B, ski school, events, transportation, guest services;
  • Effective working relationships inter/intra departmentally;
  • Effective decision making skills;
  • Working computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint;
  • Must be proficient in communication in English-speaking, writing and comprehension;
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays, as required.
  • This is a full-time, 5 day a week position.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to ski at a professional skier level in all snow and weather conditions, daily, for two hours minimum and up to eight hours at a time;
  • Be able to lift (and ski with) a minimum of 50 lbs daily, if the opportunity presents itself.
  • Must have frequent ability to lift, stand, walk, sit, and maneuver in all climate conditions on mountain, in high elevation territories;
  • Must have full dexterity of hands and fingers to feel and maneuver in cold temperatures;
  • Ability to reach with hands/arms;
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in all weather conditions at a high elevation;
  • Ability to communicate with our guests verbally -  listening and talking in a calm manner;
  • Must have good vision (corrected or not corrected) – with ability to see up-close, in the distance, peripheral, depth perception and have the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have the basic computer skills and be able to work on a computer for up to five hours per day at the minimum.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Skiing and related activities, working in outdoor winter mountain weather
  • Equipment used: skis, trucks, some power tools, snowmobile, computer
