Job Summary:

The Communications Senior Specialist is a key member of the Tahoe Region PR/Communications team. This position is designed to provide the bridge into management for a communications professional with demonstrated leadership potential.

 

This position requires strong organizational skills, a professional demeanor, meticulous attention to detail, critical thinking and decision-making skills, and the ability to multi-task and drive results in an extremely fast-paced work environment.

 

The Senior Specialist will use excellent organizational and time management skills to lead Stevens Pass Ski Resort’s media relations program and will serve as the hub for the Communications department by responding to journalist and internal client demands quickly and efficiently. The Senior Specialist should have mastered all the technical aspects of the job and will be required to take on strategic/management and decision-making responsibilities, including managing smaller-scale, multi-resort or corporate initiatives, crisis management, executive counsel and the on-resort Communications lead for Kirkwood. The Senior Specialist must be able to make decisions on the go to protect and promote the reputation of Stevens Pass, as well as Vail Resorts and its brands.

The following duties are performed either personally or with the support and follow through of other marketing and resort staff members.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Continually strive to exceed guest expectations and provide them with the finest mountain recreation experience.
  • Work with the Communications Senior Manager and Manager, to protect and promote the Stevens Pass brand
  • Develop, inspire and deliver local/regional and destination mountain enthusiasts to the Pacific Northwest.
  • Oversee the implementation of Stevens Pass Ski Resort’s media relations program, including being the primary contact for local, regional, national and international media. Maintain critical relationships with media outlets including staff writers, editors, photographers, freelancers, etc.
  • Work with the Stevens Pass and Whistler Blackcomb content specialists to develop a steady stream of content based on the year’s strategy
  • Take a key role in the development of the Pacific Northwest annual and seasonal communications strategy, including taking the lead on developing strategic PR/Communications plans for all of Steven’s Pass key business units (Snow School, Food & Beverage, Retail/Rental) and ensuring the successful execution of those plans.
  • Organize logistics for all media visits to Stevens Pass, including setting up itineraries, arranging lift tickets, snow school lessons, reservations for meals, flight details, etc. 
  • Serve as primary host for media guests to Stevens Pass, acting as a resort spokesperson to ensure all key messages are delivered.
  • Monitor and evaluate the success of the Pacific Northwest communications strategy by managing the KPI process, including developing criteria, setting metrics and pulling weekly reports.
  • Write and distribute PR materials, such as press releases, fact sheets, accolades and media kits.
  • Fulfill all in-bound media inquiries including information requests, fact checking, and photo requests.
  • Act as a company spokesperson for media interviews in print publications, television, and radio.
  • Facilitate media interviews and provide key messaging and media training to Kirkwood spokespeople.
  • Travel independently as Kirkwood representative on in-market media tours nationally.
  • Manage multi-resort and corporate initiatives, such as planning and executing in-market travel and overseeing the media season pass program.
  • Assist in issues or crisis communication scenarios by creating media statements, responding to media inquiries, developing key messaging and monitoring media coverage and social media sentiment.
  • Responsible for basic administrative duties including:
    • Monitoring and responding to the requests
    • Filing and organizing PR materials
    • Media coverage tracking and filing
    • Management and updating of the media contact database and media lists
  • Manage Kirkwood online page on the Vail Newsroom site, ensuring content and photos are up to date.
  • Responsible for ordering and monitoring media swag inventory.
  • When required, represent the Communications Senior Manager and/or Manager at events, functions and meetings. 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications or Marketing
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a communications role, including developing effective pitches, crafting brand-centric media itineraries, writing press releases, and a solid understanding of news values and how to work with the media
  • Experience in crisis/issues management an asset
  • Experience in organizing, executing and managing press or similar type events
  • Demonstrate examples of solid media relationships with travel, lifestyle and luxury media
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, WordPress, and DropBox or similar programs
  • Firm understanding and knowledge of all social media outlets
  • Expert writing, editing, communication and presentation skills
  • Advanced skiing ability – preferred
  • Experience within the mountain resort industry and knowledge of the snowsport industry is a definite asset
  • Ability to work autonomously and follow-through on expected duties in a timely fashion without managerial support
  • Must be thorough and attentive to details and able to work under pressure and handle many projects at once
  • Must be available to work flexible hours
