Patrol Team Lead – FT Year round – Northstar California


Patrol Team Lead is a supervisory position for the ski and bike patrol function, with direct reports.  Responsible for hiring/staffing, scheduling, and performance management/evaluations.  Promotes the safe, cohesive and efficient operation of the entire ski / bike patrol.  Recommends improvements to ensure optimal functioning of team.  Ensures proper communication with outside personnel during emergency situations.  Organizes and delegates daily workload.  Enforces policies, procedures and safety guidelines.  Provides training and guidance to staff; organizes and updates training documents and programs.  Performs all tasks for which work group is responsible, including all medical, emergency, safety/avalanche, trail, skiing and tobogganing, documentation, and guest services responsibilities, at the highest level of expertise.


Additional responsibilities include (but are not limited to):


  • Supervising and promoting guest safety on varied terrain in high altitude, with varying winter / summer weather conditions
  • Assisting injured guests on the mountain and administering first aid
  • Transporting injured guests off the mountain using a toboggan or supporting air lift operations
  • Organinizing trail closures and managing resources at end of day
  • Maintaining trails, such as removing trees that have fallen on runs utilizing a chainsaw or other equipment
  • Transporting and setting up mountain safety equipment
  • Transporting supplies and heavy equipment to areas of need, on skis or snowboard
  • Avalanche control including safely transporting and placing explosives on the mountain and stabilizing snow pack and cornice edges on skis
  • Driving snowmobiles and ATV’s to various areas of the mountain, as needed
  • Enforcement of the Skier Responsibility Code and Resort Policies
  • Chairlift and Gondola guest evacuation
  • Conducting accident investigations
  • Assists with scheduling of Ski Patrol team members
  • Responsible for motivating, training, managing and supporting team members




  • EMT or OEC certified
  • Stage IV or Special Skills
  • Advanced mountain biking ability
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have excellent guest service skills
  • Must work well in a team
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather in a high alpine environment
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate equipment
  • Must have sight, speech, and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions
  • Must be available to work holidays and weekends
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years experience as a professional ski patroller
  • Must demonstrate effective communication skills
  • Must be an expert level skier / rider and have the ability to patrol all open terrain in summer or winter.
  • Must have knowledge of Ski and Bike Patrol operations including lift evacuation, weather reporting, snowmobile operation, medical procedures, and avalanche control
  • Must have extensive knowledge of mountain operations, including but not limited to: bike operations, snowmaking, risk management, terrain park, lift maintenance, race crew, lift operations, mountain watch, food & beverage, events, and transportation
  • Previous patrol experience at a Vail Resorts® mountain resort preferred
