The Communications Manager is responsible for protecting the brand and proactively promoting Keystone and all of the Company’s ancillary businesses intended to drive bottom-line revenue for the resort, including daily lift tickets, season pass, ski school, F&B, upsell activities, etc. Primary responsibilities include crisis communications, strategic media relations, proactive community relations, issues management, external messaging (talking points and event logistics for the COO) and assistance with internal communication efforts.

 

The Communications Manager will be aligned with the Resort Marketing Director to focus on driving business during key periods for the resort and developing strategies and tactics to promote key messages and programs for the Resort’s ancillary businesses located in and around the resort including Ski & Ride School business, owned and operated lodging, owned and operated retail, owned and operated food and beverage outlets (on mountain and base area), conference and group business, up-sell activities (tubing, etc.), year-round events and summer mountain and village activities (lift-served mountain biking/fitness activities/golf course).

 

The Communications Manager works closely with the COO to manage public perception of issues facing the resort and promoting/fostering good community will, including collaborating with departments like public affairs to develop and implement community relations efforts for the resort and other stakeholders as needed.

 

The Communications Manager will report directly to and work with the Breckenridge Senior Communications Manager to promote Keystone-specific as well as greater, regional efforts involving Breckenridge and the Colorado resorts, in addition to working with the greater Vail Resorts Communications team to promote lines of business including season pass, advanced purchase lift tickets and EpicMix, among other duties.

 

Other roles and responsibilities include:

  • Manage crisis communications with Breckenridge Senior Communications Manager and support other resorts and regional agencies as needed
  • Develop and implement public relations goals and strategies in concert with the resort’s Marketing Director, COO, Breckenridge Senior Communications Manager, sales, hospitality and operations departments and other resort and corporate functions
  • Develop and maintain media tools resulting in story placement, including the following: online newsroom, press releases, fact sheets, talking points, photo and b-roll library, press conferences and satellite media tours, and new media and technology to communicate key messages
  • Cultivate local, regional and national relationships with key media to maximize story placements that are in line with target publications and audiences. Research and ultimately pursue new media contacts and/or channels/outlets that resonate with Keystone’s target audiences while working with agreed-upon tools and resources to do so 
  • Work with the collective communications team using a supportive and collaborative approach to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality. Establish performance goals and align on strategies, objectives and priorities
  • Collaborate with marketing for guiding content coordinator(s) and other content direction
  • Work with Keystone management and public affairs to address community issues and positively enhance the resort’s image, supporting COO as resort representative with community organizations/town and county officials/ and other stakeholders as needed (USFS, County, etc.)
  • Handle daily local, regional and national media inquiries and serve as a spokesperson for resort and oversee editorial-based film and photo productions
  • Frequent and ongoing contact with national media, particularly during ski and snowboard season to respond to inquiries, promote key messages for snowfall, events, operations and key programs
  • Facilitate interviews with subject-matter experts in Keystone and provide appropriate messaging and preparation
  • Advocate internally to uphold media relations best practices and enterprise-wide media policies
  • Assist with hosting media trips, ensuring an Experience of a Lifetime for targeted media guests
  • Assist with key resort events, activities and operations 
  • Represent Keystone, sister resorts, ancillary businesses and Vail Resorts during travel to key markets
  • Develop, implement and maintain appropriate metrics to evaluate impacts and effectiveness of external communications
  • Create and manage the departmental budget
  • Work with Corporate Communications team, and cross-functionally with resort teams, to develop synchronized media outreach and events to benefit Vail Resorts
  • Create and implement new procedures and tools to enhance department and staff efficiency
  • Maintain 24-hour (or reasonable) availability for media and management team

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism or communications preferred
  • 5+ years public relations and/or related field experience required
  • Knowledge of ski/snowboard industry or travel/tourism; mountain operation procedures; lodging background; crisis communications experience strongly preferred
  • Supervisory experience of at least one other employee preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and social media networks such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook required; experience with basic video/photo editing programs desired
  • Individual should also possess advanced writing skills, knowledge of established and emerging media, interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate consistently with a team that spans North America
  • Individual should be comfortable hosting journalists on the mountain while skiing or snowboarding, or identify alternative means to provide on-mountain hosting methods
  • Possess a passion for Keystone and its unique brand
