Summary of Job:

 

The Sr. Manager of Communications, Tahoe, will lead strategy for promoting and protecting the Vail Resorts’ trio of Tahoe-area resorts: Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood.

 

This role reports directly to the VP of Communications and is a vital member of the Company’s Communications team and the resorts’ Communications and Marketing teams. The Sr. Manager will create and lead the communications strategy for the Tahoe region, with particular focus on (1) driving business for Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and all 35 lines of the resorts’ ancillary businesses, (2) promoting and supporting Company-wide initiatives and multi-resort communications efforts, and (3) serving as a key adviser to the Tahoe resorts’ Chief Operating Officers and the resort leadership teams on all communications matters, including public and media relations, crisis communications, local community relations, and employee communications. The Sr. Manager will also manage and lead the Tahoe-based Communications team members, providing oversite of and guidance on day-to-day efforts including but not limited to: proactive pitching, fulfillment of media requests, media list maintenance, budget management, coverage tracking, media hosting, internal and external resort and COO communications, crisis communications and local issues management.

 

The Sr. Manager role requires the ability to develop sound strategies across multiple brands, to provide strong leadership to a geographically diverse team, and to build and nurture strong internal and external relationships (both in resorts and in the corporate office).

 

The Sr. Manager should be driven, agile, and emotionally intelligent, with strong critical thinking and decision-making skills and the ability to drive results in a fast-paced work environment.

 

Other Roles & Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Serve as a key business partner to resort COOs on all communications issues
  • Collaborate with Tahoe marketing team members to build cohesive, long-term vision and strategy for the Tahoe brands that supports the Company’s business objectives
  • Serve as key communications representative for the Tahoe resorts; when necessary, act as resort spokesperson for interviews in print publications, television and radio
  • Develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with media
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Tahoe-based Communications team members, who will handle day-to-day press inquiries, pitch strategic stories, host visiting press, develop key messages, prepare spokespeople for interviews and serve as a liaison between the resort and press
  • Develop (or oversee development of) media tools such as press releases, fact sheets, talking points and media kits
  • Provide oversight and management of Tahoe communications budgets Manages and track PR efforts and results, with strong analytical skills, through reporting metrics that display the value of coverage
  • Support multi-resort and corporate initiatives.
  • Advise on crisis communication scenarios Maintain on-call availability, including weekends and holidays Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications or Marketing

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a communications role, preferably in the ski industry or a related industry
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with teams remotely
  • Ability to work autonomously and follow-through on expected duties in a timely fashion without heavy managerial support
  • Ability to build internal and external relationships
  • Firm understanding and knowledge of all social media outlets
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, WordPress, and DropBox or similar programs
  • Experience with basic video/photo editing programs desired
  • Intermediate to advanced skiing or snowboarding ability
