Job Summary:

The Mountain Resorts Legal team is seeking a Mountain Counsel to join our team. The Mountain Resorts Legal team provides legal support to the Company’s Mountain Division and a broad range of the corporate functions such as Health and Safety, Marketing, IT, Finance, Hospitality, and Food and Beverage. 


This position will also provide legal support to the world class resorts in our East Region like Stowe, Okemo, and Hunter on a variety of matters including real estate, regulatory and pre-litigation risk.  This position will also support all aspects of real estate development deals, primarily located at our Colorado resorts.


A successful candidate for this position will be Hungry, Humble and Smart, be comfortable as a legal generalist, but with strategic familiarity in areas of law such as land use and real estate. They will be able to quickly identify material risks and succinctly identify and communicate and drive mitigating steps forward in a clear and concise manner.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice, counsel and support to the East Region within the Mountain Division and corporate functions regarding year-round operations on a variety of legal issues, mitigating regulatory, contractual, real property, and other pre-litigation risks associated with our operations;
  • Proactively identify trends in legal issues to strategically mitigate risk across mountain operations;
  • Support strategic real estate development deals by providing legal advice to the Real Estate Development team at all phases of development and drafting, reviewing, and negotiating transaction documents, including ground leases, purchase and sale agreements, declarations, restrictive covenants, easements, development agreements, assignments, deeds, escrow agreements, guaranties, etc.
  • Collaborate with guest and employee operations, health and safety personnel, and other company departments to assist in developing and advising on company policies, procedures and best practices, to add value and reduce legal risks to the Company;
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of legal training to  Mountain Operations teams;
  • Contribute broadly to the leadership of the businesses, working effectively with senior management and creating strong trusted advisor relationships with the business leaders;
  • Adhere to and support standards and goals of the Company and the Legal Department; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and JD required.
  • Must have an active state bar license. If you have a non-Colorado state bar license, the successful applicant must qualify for a Colorado single-client bar license (or full Colorado bar license).
  • Experience leading complex real estate transactions or land use matters either in a law firm or corporate/in-house legal department.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience. 
  • Agile and flexible thinker, with ability to learn new areas of law and the business. 
  • Clear and concise communicator (written and oral) with all levels within the organization.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under high pressure conditions and to successfully handle urgent situations with patience and diplomacy.


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience building real estate legal processes in a corporate/in-house legal department.
  • Experience with issues impacting public lands, US Forest Service or state leased lands.
  • Experience managing and supporting commercial leasing portfolio with both tenant and landlord representations.


The budgeted range starts at $130,000 - $151,320 + annual bonus.  Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
