The Senior Manager of Revenue Accounting is an integral member of the Corporate Accounting team that reports to the Director of Revenue Accounting.  The role includes management responsibility for the Revenue Accounting Manager and Staff.  This role has significant exposure in Vail Resorts’ finance organization and will be a working partner with the Director of Revenue Accounting, Assistant Controller and the Finance team.  The Senior Manager of Revenue Accounting is primarily responsible for ensuring the proper recognition and reporting of revenue (US GAAP) and statistics for all mountain-access and mountain-activity products, both winter and summer (i.e. season pass, lift tickets, sightseeing, etc.), private clubs, and strategic alliances.  In addition, the role is responsible for the integration of acquired resorts onto the mountain resort point of sale system (RPOS) for purposes of revenue and statistic recognition for both the general ledger and daily management reporting.  The position also has responsibility over calculating and paying land use fees associated with our mountain resorts, including involvement with associated periodic audits.  This role will also liaise with other business groups to address accounting and business issues as they arise.  The revenue accounting team consists of five individuals, which includes the Senior Manager, and has two direct reports including the Revenue Accounting Manager and a revenue accounting Staff III.  The Revenue Accounting Manager has two direct reports.


A proven ability to effectively evaluate risk, leverage teams, maintain a high-level of accuracy, operate efficiently in a fast-paced environment, dive into and understand details, and strong systems skills are essential to this role as the revenue accounting function operates in numerous point of sale systems throughout the organization and is responsible for complex account reconciliations across 12 resorts in the United States and Canada.


Additionally, this individual must ensure departmental compliance in a SOX environment and be able to fully understand the risks and be able to perform and monitor controls within the department.


Additional requirements and responsibilities include:

  • Understand of US GAAP, most specifically as it relates to revenue recognition
  • Service oriented focus on continuous process improvement in order to effectively complete required tasks as well as to successfully integrate acquired resort activities
  • Understand product attributes and behaviors and manage testing and continuous monitoring of all products within RPOS to ensure accurate reporting of revenue and stats to the General and Daily Ledger’s
  • Preparation and accurate recording of revenue related to amortization of deferred club membership initiation fees, including accretion of interest where applicable, and dues
  • Liaise with Mountain Finance on season pass revenue budget and forecast information
  • Partner with IT on integrations of POS systems at acquired resorts, including active involvement in ongoing integration meetings, user acceptance testing, and ultimate sign off on production releases
  • Calculate and recognize revenue as appropriate and ensure accuracy and timeliness of bi-monthly payments (winter season only) to third party resorts
  • Actively participate in leadership and development of both the revenue accounting and revenue audit teams, with the goal of leveraging team members and creating a strong bench for growth and succession
  • Prepare and review of journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and US GAAP compliance
  • Develop staff goals and key performance indicators to measure performance and ensure the department is performing at a high level
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex agreements, including recognizing potential revenue recognition issues and preparing meaningful, comprehensive documents outlining the issues while formulating a recommendation for resolution (generally related to strategic marketing partnerships)
  • Demonstrate a positive, professional and team attitude toward coworkers, internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide nVision training and support
  • Other duties as assigned to meet team and business needs


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, preferably accounting
  • Minimum 7 to 9 years accounting experience
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience
  • CPA preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and a proven ability to work in POS or GL systems and understand system complexities, issues, mapping, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Flexible and adaptable to fast-paced and changing environments
  • Ability to lead, work independently and in a team environment
  • PeopleSoft and RPOS experience a plus
